Did you mean “solve by substituting”?

Make y the subject of the first equation
8x + 6 = y

Substitute for y in the second equation
2x - 3(8x + 6) = 4
2x -24x - 18 = 4
-22x = 4 + 18 = 22
x = 22/-22 = -1
y = 8 x -1 + 6
y = -8 + 6
y = -2
