Tam needs a total of 2 pounds of vegetables for a soup recipe.

He already has 2/3 pound of carrot and 1/4 pound of celery

how many more pounds of vegetables does he need to buy?

your answer would be 1 and 1/12. to get how many pounds he has already you need to find a common denominator, that denominator would be 12. so 2/3 turns into 8/12 and 1/4 turns into 3/12. add them together you get 11/12 which isn’t one pound yet. to get 1 pound you add 1/12 of a pound more. to get 2 pounds add 1 pound. since he didn’t have that 1 pound yet or that 1/12 of a pound yet they go together (1 and 1/12)
