Answer: 38 nickels, 24 quarters

Explanation:

x=number of quarters

y=number of nickels

x + y = 62

$0.25x + $0.05y = $7.90

solve for x in terms of y, then substitute into the 2nd equation:

x = 62-y

.25(62-y) + .05y = 7.90

15.5 - .25y + .05y = 7.90

15.5 - .20y = 7.90

-.20y = -7.6

y = -7.6/-.20

y = 38

now solve for x:

x + 38 = 62

x = 62-38 = 24

x = 24
