Find g(x), where g(x) is the translation 5 units down of f(x)=x2.

Write your answer in the form a(x–h)2+k, where a, h, and k are integers.

If we want to translate (aka move)
f(x) = x^2 down 5 units, we need to subtract 5 from the
x^2.

g(x) = x^2-5

The
k in the
a(x-h)^2 +k form will always be the vertical translation component. If you translate up,
k is positive. If you translate down,
k is negative.
