If a 16-foot utility pole is connected to a cable

that is attached to the ground 12 feet from the
base of the pole, find then length of the cable?

Using Pythagoras' Theorem:


h^(2) = a^(2) +b^(2) \\h^(2) = 16^(2) +12^(2) \\h^(2) = 256+144h^(2) = 400\\\\

Now you want to get h alone. To do that you need to get rid of the squared by finding the square root of 400.


h=√(400)\\h=20
