let's consider two numbers for this case, hmmm say

x = 13

y = 17

so yes, 13 < 17

also true, 13 + 2 < 17 + 2

also true that 2(13) < 2(17)

now, -13 < -17? well, not quite

reason being, the on the negative side of the number line, the closer to 0, the larger the number, for that case, -1 is much much larger than -1,000,000.
