Answer: It is a subduction zone.

Explanation: The Pacific plate is slowly going under the Mariana plate because of the heat of radiation proccesses in the planet's interior. The stresses of the Pacific plates going under the Maricana plate pulls the Mariana plate down with it and causes the trench.
