In y=mx+b the letter M represents the slope

Answer: Slope

I'm not sure why m is chosen as the slope, but you can think of the phrase "mountains have a slope" to help remember m is involved.

The b is the y intercept.

For example, y = 2x+5 has a slope of 2 and y intercept of 5.
