Area of a triangle - A=1/2bh or area=1/2 base times height

Area of a rectangle - A=lw or area=length times width

Separate the shapes first, you would draw a line between the two if this was on paper.

Find the separate areas.
Rectangle area:

8*5=40

Triangle area:

find the height first. the height of this triangle is the same as the length of the rectangle minus the 1 and 2 cms.

8-1-2=5

1/2*5*5=12.5

Now add the areas:

40+12.5=52.5cm^2
