It is one of the most important Supreme Court cases in the history of the United States. For context, Maryland tried to tax the national bank, but McCulloch refused to pay the taxes. The Supreme Court decided that the national bank does not have to pay state taxes because basically, national power is greater than state power. This reinforced the Supremacy Clause.
