a = 2

Explanation:

4a + 5 = 12a - 11

Subtract 4a on both sides. (You can do subtract 12a on both sides OR 4a on both sides but I'm going with 4a cause it's going to result in a positive answer)

5 = 8a - 11

Now add 11 to both sides. -11 will cancel out and it will result in

16 = 8a

Now divide both sides by 8 to make a alone. This will result in

a = 2

So your answer is a = 2
