The ladder touches the wall 24 feet above
the ground. How far away from the base
of the wall is the ladder?

Answer: 4 feet

Explanation:

a^{2} + b^{2} = c^{2}

24 + b^{2} = 40

-24 + 24 + b^{2} = 40 - 24

b^{2} = 16

b = \sqrt{16}

b = 4
