A plane flies due north at 225 km/hr. A wind blows it due east at 45

km/hr. What is the plane's resultant velocity?

Answer:

V = 45 i + 225 j vector expression for V of plane

V = (45^2 + 225^2)^1/2 = 229.5 km/hr net speed

tan θ = 225 / 45 = 5

θ = 78.7 deg north of east

Note (the problem says the plane is blown east which implies that a westerly wind (from the west) is blowing)
