The author could have said " the yard was covered in frost". Why is this imagery so powerful

Without knowing what the author actually said, it’s hard to answer this question. But assuming that the author used more descriptive language, it is more powerful to illicit the readers’ senses when describing a scene. A simple statement conveys a fact, but a descriptive statement helps the reader to not only imagine it, but to also become immersed in the scene as if they are in the setting themselves. The best authors captivate their readers in this manner.
