From 618 to 907, China was controlled by the Tang dynasty, and from 960 to 1279 by the Song dynasty. Chinese poetry, painting, calligraphy, and other creative forms all reached new heights throughout the rule of both dynasties, yet the two eras were extremely different in many respects. The Tang was a militarily strong empire centered on Central Asia, whereas the Song was a relatively weak nation centered in southern China.
