The Freedom Ride, or Rides as their were several, were rides from the north into the south of the USA in the early 60's. They consisted of white and black activists driving into the south to challenge the segregation which still existed.

They were a significant part of the civil rights movement in that they were frequently met with extreme violence which gained widespread media attention across the USA. Indeed 3 Freedom Riders were abducted and murdered in Mississippi in 1964.

Because the Freedom Rides came from the north and many of the Riders were whites from the north, this greatly increased public awareness of the continuing extent of segregation and violence in the south.

Such actions helped in the civil rights movement and contributed to President Johnson gaining support, which, in turn, enabled him to pass major civil rights legislation in 1964 with The Civil Rights Act and in 1965 with the Voting Rights Act.
