The Songhal people founded the city of Gao around 800 AD. When the Mali Empire captured the city, It became a part of the vast Mali Empire. In 1375, when Mali was starting to get weak, the Songhai people rebelled and formed the next Empire in West Africa. Finally, they captured Timbuktu, the largest city in the region. As the Songhai Empire expanded, it took over many of the territories and cities that had belonged to the Mali Empire.
As were the two empires before it, Songhai was a trading empire. Gold and salt continued to be important products. The empire traded with the Berbers from Morocco who were Muslims like they were. The trade routes across the Sahara Desert were largely dominated by the Songhai Empire.
Sunni Ali Ber was a mighty commander of the army who had great victories in capturing major, important cities. He transformed Gao and became the first great ruler of the Songhai Empire. Under his rule, Songhai became a strong, unified empire. He was a powerful but also a harsh ruler. One of his great accomplishments was taking the city of Timbuktu with its world famous University of Sankore Mosque. It took him seven more years to take the city of Djenne.
This was a bigger prize even than Timbuktu, with international trading links, a university, and unmatched architecture.
After Sunni Ali died in 1492, his son Sonni Baru took over the throne. Almost immediately, he lost his position to Askia (Emperor) Muhammad in a historically bloody battle. Tradition says that during the attack, one of Sonni Baru's sisters cried out "askia!" which meant "forceful one."
Muhammad liked the title and took it as his own.
Instead of conquering new areas,
Askia
Muhammad concentrated on establishing strict Muslim rule throughout the empire. He established schools and encouraged scholars and skilled workers to come to the Songhai Empire. He centralized the government and appointed all the mayors and governors of the cities in the empire. He also strengthened political and cultural ties to other Muslimstates.
After Askia Muhammad died in 1528, Songhai had peace and prosperity under many other emperors. Trade in large cities like Gao, Timbuktu, and Djenne flourished. Even the numerous small farmers had success in agriculture.
