(10x+y)-(10y+x)=36

Put like terms together

Remember the terms in the second are being subtracted from the terms in the first

(10x-x)+(y-10y)=36

9x-9y=36

Dividing both sides by 9 gives

x-y=4

The difference between the numbers is 4.
