The staircase has three identical parallelogram-shaped panels. The horizontal distance between each panel is 4.25 inches. The area of each panel is 287 square inches. What is the value of x ?

Explanation:

What we are requested to find is the height of the panel/parallelogram = x

Area of each panel = base × height = 287 in.²

Given that the total length of the 3 panels which includes the length of the 2 gaps within them = 50.5 in., first, let's find the base length of each panel.

Base length of each panel = (total length - length of the 2 gaps in between the 3 panels) ÷ 3

= (50.5 - 2*4.25) ÷ 3

= 42 ÷ 3

Base length of each panel = 14 in.

✔️Next is to find the height of the panel, x.

area of parallelogram = base × height

Base = 14 in.

height = x

Area = 287 in.²

Plug in the values

287 = 14 × x

287 = 14x

Divide both sides by 14

287/14 = x

20.5 = x
