(5x+1) + (12x-8) = 180

You are doing this because both sides on a straight line add up to 180 degrees. The two angles would add up to 180 degrees since they are on the one side of the line.

Simplifying:

(5x+12x) + (1-8) = 180

Add your common variables together; keep in mind that variables are placed before numbers.

Adding:

17x-7 = 180

Process:

To do this, you are going to simply do the opposite operation for the number without the variable on both sides of the equal sign.

17x - 7 = 180

+ 7 + 7

------------------

17x = 187

----- ------

17 17

x = 11

You divided by 17 on both sides because you needed to get the x variable by itself. Hope this helped! :)
