The purpose of the Albany Plan of Union was to unite the original 13 colonies for a better-structured government, hence the “Join or Die” cartoon. It was written by Benjamin Franklin in Albany, New York of 1754. Although it was widely supported throughout the colonies and was a collective effort of collaboration, it failed when conceived by Britain to be unnecessary. It got rejected, but the colonists were recognized as an individual nation 22 years following this plan.
