Explanation:

We require to find the length of the diagonal (d) piece of metal

using Pythagoras' identity in the right triangle

the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other 2 sides, that is

d² = 8² + 6² = 64 + 36 = 100 ( take square root of both sides )

d =
√(100) = 10

the length of the 5 pieces is then

8 + 8 + 6 + 6 + 10 = 38 m

the total weight of the 5 pieces is then

weight = 38 × 1.5 Kg = 57 Kg
