The main factor that made steamboats such an improvement was there speed, being able to reach 5 miles an hour with much less effort then other water crafts. This, combined with the slight increased weight capacity, allowed them to take large amounts of people and cargo. It wasn't until other modes of transportation came around that were more cost efficient, thus causing the steamboat craze to....lose steam. I'm sorry for that last joke, but I hope this helps!
