A jar of sweets contains 5 yellow sweets, 4 red sweets, 8 green sweets, 4 orange sweets and 3 white sweets. Ola chooses a sweet at random. What is the probability that she will pick either a yellow or orange sweet? Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.

Answer: 3/8

Explanation:

Number of yellow sweets = 5

Number of red sweets = 4

Number of green sweets = 8

Number of orange sweets = 4

Number of white sweets = 3

Total number of sweets = 24

The probability of picking either a yellow or orange sweet will be:

= P(Y) + P(O)

= 5/24 + 4/24

= 9/24

= 3/8
