First convert your fraction into a decimal
1 2/3 =1.66
They swam 34 laps so take 34 and divide it by 1.66
34/1.66= 20.48
So his swimming rate is 20.48 laps per hour

1 2/3 = 5/3
5/3 ÷ 5/3 = 1
34 ÷ 5/3 = 34 x 3/5
102/5 = 20.4
20.4 laps per hour
