x + y = 55 → (1)

3y + 11 = x → ()

substitute x = 3y + 11 into (1)

3y + 11 + y = 55

4y + 11 = 55 ( subtract 11 from both sides )

4y = 44 ( divide both sides by 4 )

y = 11

substitute y = 11 into (1)

x + 11 = 55 ( subtract 11 from both sides )

y = 44

smaller number is 11 and larger number is 44
