It must have been horrifying to be a prisoner of war and you would not be given much food since food was already scarce already. The amount of sicknesses you could contract would be high and you could possibly die of them. You would also be under intense stress and isolation in a camp like this.

Andersonville had the highest mortality rate of any Civil War prison. Nearly 13,000 of the 45,000 men who entered the stockade died there, chiefly of malnourishment
