The town's population increased from 80,000 to 90,000 in ten years. What was the percent of increase?

1) We can solve this problem by writing the following ratios and then cross multiplying

2) Note that we're going to consider 80,000 as the 100%


\begin{gathered} 80,000-------100\% \\ 90,000-------x \\ x=(90000\cdot100)/(80000) \\ x=(90000)/(800)=112.5 \end{gathered}

We can now subtract 100 from that 112.5


112.5\%-100\%=12.5\%

3)Thus the percent of increase in that town was:


12.5\%
