Clasification based on the composition of the cell wall
Gram positive: have a thick peptidoglycan layer and do not have an outer lipid membrane.
Gram negative: have a thin peptidoglycan layer and do not have an outer lipid membrane.
Gram-positive bact:eria are classified by the color they take on after applying a chemical process called a Gram stain. Gram-positive bacteria stain blue. Other bacteria stain red, they are gram negative.
They stain differently because their cell walls are different.
