You have the following algbraic expression:

4(3+x) - 10

The way you could use to tell the previous expression to a friend is the following:

The subtraction of 10, to a four times the sum of three and a number

Four times the sum of three with a number is the term 4(x + 3). The subtraction of ten to the previous term is simply -10
