Simplifying expressions

We are given the expression

2(-6 + 5k) - 1

The first step is to remove the parentheses by multiplying everything inside of it by 2:

(2)(-6) + (2)*(5k) - 1

Note the -1 is not affected by the operation above

Now we multiply:

-12 + 10k - 1

Finally, we collect like terms. In this case, the numbers alone

-13 + 10k

This is the simplified expression as required

Answer: -13 + 10k
