Lincoln had strongly opposed the institution of slavery and wanted it to be abolished but during the more initial stages of the Civil War, he had proclaimed that purpose of the war was to maintain the integrity and for the preservation of the Union and not necessarily for the abolition of slavery. But later on in the war, due to influences and with the rising possiblity of European intervention, Lincoln then proclaimed that the war was for the abolition/emancipation of slavery and the preservation of the Union.
