Apply the Pythagorean theorem:

C^2 = a^2 + b^2

Where:

C = hypotenuse

A & b= the other two legs of the triangle:

Replacing:

c^2 = 12^2 + 4^2

Solve for c

c^2 = 144 + 16

c^2 = 160

c= √160

c= 12.65 inches
