5. Timmy and Kevin each sold foam fingers and peanuts for a school fundraiser. Tim sold 16 foam fingers (Go Ravens!) and four boxes of peanuts for $132. Let:

x = cost of the foam fingers

y = cost of the peanuts

Tim sold 16 foam fingers (Go Ravens!) and four boxes of peanuts for $132, so:


16x+4y=132

Kevin sold 20 foam fingers and 6 boxes of peanuts and earned $190, so:


20x+6y=190

Let:


\begin{gathered} 16x+4y=132_{\text{ }}(1) \\ 20x+6y=190_{\text{ }}(2) \\ \end{gathered}

Using elimination method:


\begin{gathered} 4(2)-6(1)\colon \\ 80x-96x+24y-24y=760-792 \\ -16x=-32 \\ x=(-32)/(-16) \\ x=2 \end{gathered}

Replace the value of x into (1):


\begin{gathered} 16(2)+4y=132 \\ 32+4y=132 \\ 4y=132-32 \\ 4y=100 \\ y=(100)/(4) \\ y=25 \end{gathered}

Cost of a foam finger = $2

Cost of a box of peanuts = $25
