a) The given equation is:

5.39 + g = 2.39 + 15

Collect like terms

Note that 5.39 becomes -5.39 when it crosses to the right hand side of the equality sign

g = 2.39 + 15 - 5.39

g = 12

b) To check that the value for g is correct, substitute 12 for g in the given question and see if the Right Hand Side equals to the Left Hand Side. If they are equal, then the value for g is correct.

5.39 + 12 = 2.39 + 15

17.39 = 17.39

Since the Right hand Side = Left Hand Side, the value of g is correct.

If the check does not work, it means the value of g is not correct. This is because, it means that the vale of g gotten will not make the given equation to be true.
