For part 1:

If we locate -9 in the number line and count the units to 0, we can see that the distance of -9 to 0 is 9

Then:


|-9|=9

For part 2:

Doing the same with -3, the distance to 0 is 3, and the distance from 4 to 0 is 4.

Then:


|-3|+|4|=3+4=7
