Final answer:

The story follows Eli, a cobbler known for his kindness and generosity, who ultimately is rewarded by a traveler he had helped years before. This confirms the moral that indeed, it pays to be good.

Step-by-step explanation:

Once upon a time, in a small, prosperous village, there lived a kind cobbler named Eli. Eli was known not only for his exquisite shoe-making skills but also for his generous heart. He often repaired shoes for free for those who couldn't afford to pay, and he greeted everyone with a warm smile. Despite his own modest means, Eli's contentment with life was as rich and deep as the wealthiest in any land.

One stormy night, a weary traveler sought shelter in Eli's humble shop. Without hesitation, Eli welcomed the stranger, offering him food, a place to rest, and even a pair of new boots made from his limited leather stock. The traveler, who was a wealthy merchant in disguise, was touched by Eli's kindness and vowed to repay him one day.

Years went by, and Eli faced hardships as the village economy began to decline. However, he continued to spread goodwill, believing in the inherent value of being good. Just as Eli was about to close his shop for good, the disguised merchant returned, revealing his true identity. He rewarded Eli's past kindness by investing in his business, turning the humble cobbler's fortunes around. The cobbler's story became a celebrated tale in the village, showcasing that indeed, it pays to be good.
