Arnold ate breakfast at restaurant. The total cost of his food, juice, and coffee was $6.45. If the sales tax rate is 8% and Arnold wants to leave a 20% tip, about how much should he pay?

so in this problem, you’d tax first then tip.

$6.45(1.08)= $6.97

with this, it gives you the amount after tax there are other way like this

$6.45+$6.45(.08)= $6.97

after you have found the amount, do the same thing with the tip amount:

$6.97(1.2)= $8.36

Total for purchase: $6.45

Amount taxed: $.52

Amount Tipped: $1.40

Subtotal: $8.37 this rounded differently, use the $8.36 on the top.
