Tap A can fill 4 pails in 55 seconds.

Tap B can fill 3 pails in 50 seconds.

If both taps are turned on at the same time, and assuming that the rate of water flow from both taps is the same, how long will it take for 16 such pails to be filled?

Give your answer in minutes and seconds, to the nearest second.

Answer:

Below in bold.

Explanation:

Work in times to fill 1 pail:-

tap A takes 55/4 seconds

tap B takes 50/3 seconds

Let time to fill one pail be x when filling together, then:

3/50 + 4/55 = 1/x

165x + 200x = 55*50

x = 2750 /(365) = 7.5342 seconds

To fill 16 pails it takes 7.5342* 16

= 120.55 seconds

= 2 minutes 1 second to the nearest second..
