We can decompose the shape into two triangles, one with a base of 4 yds and a height of 5 yds, and the other with a base of 4 yds and a height of 13 yds.

The area of a triangle is calculated as follows:

A=\text{base}\cdot\text{height}\cdot(1)/(2)

Then, the area of the triangles are:

\begin{gathered} A_1=4\cdot5\cdot(1)/(2) \\ A_1=10yd^2 \\ A_2=4\cdot13\cdot(1)/(2) \\ A_2=26yd^2 \end{gathered}

And the are of the shape is 10 + 26 = 36 yd²
