For:

8x^3+16x^2

Factor 8x² out of the expression:

8x^2(x+2)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

For:

\begin{gathered} 2x^2-x+8x-4 \\ \end{gathered}

Add like terms:

2x^2+7x-4

The coefficient of x² is 2 and the constant term is -4. The product of 2 and -4 is -8. The factors of -8 which sum to 7 are -1 and 8, thus:

\begin{gathered} 2x^2+7x-4=4(2x-1)+x(2x-1) \\ so\colon \\ 4(2x-1)+x(2x-1)=(2x-1)(x+4) \end{gathered}
