Write and solve an equation for each situation.

1. You and your friends decide to go to the batting cages. At D-Bat in Gahanna, it costs $5 to use a batting cage and $2 per round of pitches from the machine. If you spent $20, how many rounds of pitches did you purchase?

2. You want to have a skating party. It costs $100 for a party room rental at United Skates. In addition, it costs $5 for skate rental for each person attending a party. If a party costs $175, how many people total were at the party?

Answer:

1. 2x+5=20

2. 5x+100=175

Explanation:

2 represents the cost of each round of pitch and since the number of pitches in unknown we put an x there. 5 is the money it costs to use the batting cage. 20 is the total money they used

5 represents the cost per person for skate rental and number of people is unknown so it is represented with x. 100 is the money it costs to rent the room. 175 is the total money used
