Simplify the equation x - 5 = 8x + 9 to obtain the value of x.

\begin{gathered} x-5=8x+9 \\ x-8x=9+5 \\ -7x=14 \\ x=(14)/(-7) \\ =-2 \end{gathered}

So x = -2.
