Diborane is prepared by the reduction of boron trichloride with lithium aluminium hydride.

${ \blue{ \sf{4BF3 + 3LiAlH4 → 2B2H6 + 3AlF3 + 3LiF}}}$

It can be also prepared by reducing trifluoride with sodium hydride at 180°C.

${ \red{ \tt{2BF3 + 6NaH \: —(180°C)→ \: B2H6 + 6NaF}}}$
