We have the following general rule for the slope of the line given two points on it:

m=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)

in this case, we have the following information:

\begin{gathered} m=(1)/(2) \\ (x_1,y_1)=(3,4) \\ (x_2,y_2)=(1,y) \end{gathered}

if we use the formula, we get:

\begin{gathered} (1)/(2)=m=(y-4)/(1-3) \\ \Rightarrow(y-4)/(-2)=(1)/(2) \end{gathered}

next, we have to solve for y:

\begin{gathered} (y-4)/(-2)=(1)/(2) \\ \Rightarrow y-4=-2\cdot(1)/(2)=-1 \\ \Rightarrow y=-1+4=3 \\ y=3 \end{gathered}

therefore, y = 3
