Nitrates are molecules that plant uses to promote growth. Nitrates represent a source of nitrogen, which is essential to carry on DNA replication in tissue proliferation. Thus, if a plant suffered a cutting event it must repair its tissue, therefore it requires an additional supply of nitrogen, which comes in the form of nitrates.
