Sleek Meadows Horse Farm plants 31 acres of hay and oats. The owners know that their needs are best met if they plant 9 acres more of hay than oats. How many acres of each should they plant?

Let

x ------> acres of hay

y -----> acres of oats

we have that

x+y=31

x=31-y -------> equation A

x=y+9 ------> equation B

equate both equations

31-y=y+9

solve for y

y+y=31-9

2y=22

y=11

Find the value of x

x=y+9

x=20

therefore

20 acres of hay

11 acres of oats
