Question 1 :(THIS IS NOT MY ANSWER, I HAVE GOTTEN THIS FROM A DIFFERENT SITE, BUT WANTED TO LIST IT HERE) If Sam's charges $3 per hour plus a $25 service charge then,
letting h = # hours rented... Sam's equation for total cost is:
S = 3h + 25
Claire's charges $8 per hour plus a $5 service charge so
C = 8h + 5
At how many hours will the rental cost be the same?
To solve that set the equations equal and solve for h
8h+5=3h+25 subtract 3h from both sides
5h +5 = 25 subtract 5 from both sides
5h = 20 divide both sides by 5
h = 4
Rental cost is the same amount if the time rented is 4 hours
Under what conditions would you rent from Sam's as opposed to Claire's?
Obviously, what we want to know is when one cost less than the other...
8h + 5<3h + 25 will tell us when Claire's costs are less than Sam's.
Following the same steps as above, replacing the equal sign with
a less than sign we get:
h < 4
For any rental time frame less than 4 hours, Claire's cost less total
than Sam's. Thus, rent from Claire's for time periods under 4 hours,
and rent from Sam's for time frames over 4 hours.
