The amount in the container = 7 2/3

The amount left to go is 18 - 7 2/3

Now I don't know how you have been taught to do this, but I think the easiest way is to make 18 = 17 3/3 If you do that then the 5 will be subtracted from the 17 and the 2/3 will be subtracted from the 3/3

17 - 5 = 12

3/3 - 2/3 = 1/3

So the answer is 12 1/3
