We live in a place where, for the most part, we don't fear being hissed at, gawked at or spat at for being different, for our individuality, for our sexual orientation. I'm not saying that it never happens, just that Canada has obtained a reputation for being a safe place for people of all walks of life.
My parents brought me here when I was five years old and I have thanked them many times over for it. And even though I wasn't born here, I have been a Canadian citizen (since the age of 13) and I am a proud Canadian.
